Archimedes Screw Pump Conservation

24 Aug 2021 - 24 Aug 2021

A rare chance to see conservation work in progress

Our example of this ingenious form of pump, from the days before steam, was recovered from the Kennet and Avon Canal at Hungerford in 1973.  It arrived at Crofton during 2010 and has been on display in a custom-built shelter on site. However, time and the elements have taken their toll!  With thanks to the Association of Independent Museums and the Wiltshire Community Foundation for their assistance in funding this work.

Peter Meehan ACR, of the Historic Metalwork Conservation Company Ltd, has been appointed to carry out conservation treatment to the Archimedes’ Screw at Crofton. During the period of the conservation treatment there will be three public viewing sessions. The final session will be on Tuesday 24 August 2021 at 2.30pm.

Tickets are free, but advance booking is required. No entry to the Pumping Station. No catering on site.

Please remember that the café is closed, and that public access to the site is by the main gate only. No access from the lower canal entrance at lock 60. This helps our hard-working volunteers and staff regulate visitor numbers to the site and keep COVID safe.
